Dr. Syrus Islam is an Associate Professor and “Accounting Curriculum Lead” at the Auckland University of Technology. Syrus is a dedicated teacher and has taught courses for Bachelor Degree (BBus), Research Master Degree (MBus), Master in Business Administration (MBA), and Master in Professional Accounting (MPA). He believes in research-informed teaching and loves to help students use accounting and business knowledge to make better decisions in today’s fast-changing world. He has experience in developing innovative curriculum and teaching approaches.

Syrus is a passionate researcher who has cross-disciplinary research expertise and interests in Accounting & Social Impact, Management Accounting & Control System, Impact Investing, Social Enterprise, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Impact Measurement & Management, and Risk Measurement & Management. His research is practice-focused, which has attracted several awards from the likes of Emerald Publishing and the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ). His research has been published in a variety of leading international journals, including Journal of Management Accounting Research, Accounting and Finance, Australian Journal of Management, Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management, and Journal of Business Venturing Insights. Syrus also serves as a reviewer for several reputed journals such as Management Accounting Research, Accounting and Finance, Australian Journal of Management, Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management, Journal of Business Venturing Insights, Business & Society, and Meditary Accountancy Research.

Syrus plays a leadership role in the global impact investing industry. Since 2020, he has been serving on the Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS+) Working Group of the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) in New York, USA, where he offers his expertise to the ongoing development of the generally accepted system for measuring, managing, and optimizing impact in the global impact investing industry. Syrus is also a co-organizer of the Accounting for Social Impact Case Competition for University Students – a global competition that promotes students’ understanding of using accounting and business knowledge to address real-world problems. From 2017 to 2022, he served as a mentor and judge of the Young Enterprise Scheme run by the Auckland Business Chamber to equip young people to navigate through their social entrepreneurial journey.

Syrus also has a strong record of service roles in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the Auckland University of Technology. This includes his past and current appointments in the Faculty Postgraduate Research Programmes Assessment Board, Faculty Teaching & Learning Committee, and Faculty Diversity & Inclusion Action Group.

Syrus earned his PhD in Management Accounting from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He is also a Chartered Accountant (CA) from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Before entering academia, Syrus was in the corporate industry and held various positions in multinational corporations such as Danone and SingTel in Asia. He is an avid gardener and enjoys being with nature. He grew up in Khulna – a beautiful Bangladesh city famous for the Sundarbans (the world’s largest mangrove forest) and cultural heritage sites.
