Dr. Syrus Islam is a Senior Lecturer of Accounting at the Auckland University of Technology.

He teaches courses focused on management accounting, and helps students to realize how management accounting knowledge is increasingly important not only in professional lives (regardless of career destinations) but also in personal lives. He believes in research-informed teaching.

Currently, Syrus is passionate about researching in the areas of Impact Investing and the Social Enterprise sector (see his specific research interests below). His research is practice-focused, which has attracted several awards. Syrus publishes research papers in leading international journals (A* and A ranked): Journal of Management Accounting Research, Journal of Business Venturing Insights, Accounting and Finance, and Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management. He also reviews research papers for several reputed journals.

Before academia, Syrus was in industry, served as Regional Manager with Danone (a Fortune Global 500 company) and Senior Executive with SingTel Group Operator (a leading global telecommunication company). Since 2018 he has been serving as a mentor and judge of the Young Enterprise Scheme – a New Zealand-based national competition to inspire young people to discover their potential in business and life. Syrus is an avid gardener and enjoys reading about the physiology of various fruit trees.
