Sergio Paramo Ortiz

Biography

Dr. Sergio Paramo Ortiz is a Lecturer in social entrepreneurship at the School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University. He obtained his PhD from the University of York, UK with the thesis titled: Social Enterprises and Social Innovation: Insights from Mexico. His doctoral thesis had a double focus: to explain the different types of social enterprises in Mexico, their origins and institutional context; and to explain the intersection between social enterprises and social innovation at a conceptual level. His PhD research formed part of the Mexican chapter of the International Comparative Social Enterprise Models Project, coordinated by the International Research Network on Social Enterprise (EMES Network) where he is an active member.

He currently co-coordinates and teaches the course Diversity in Entrepreneurship, and teaches the courses Social and Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation and Sustainable Development alongside master and bachelor thesis supervision. His research expertise is on the intersection between social enterprises and social innovation, social enterprise typologies in the global South, and on decolonial approaches of collective action. His research interests include social innovation, social enterprises, collective social entrepreneurship/enterprises, decoloniality and social enterprise, social and solidarity economy enterprises, and sustainable entrepreneurship/enterprises.

He was appointed PhD representative of the EMES PhD Network from 2020 to 2021. There, he led the coordination of training and communication activities for the PhDs affiliated, and also represented their interests at the EMES Network board of directors. During his PhD studies and prior to joining Maastricht University, he worked as a postgraduate teaching assistant for the MSc Sustainability Business: Leadership, Innovation, Management; a programme developed in partnership between Maastricht University and The University of York. In this programme, he delivered Problem Based Learning (PBL) sessions for the modules: Introduction to Sustainable Business, Sustainable Business Innovation, and Sustainable Entrepreneurship. He also has an MSc in Corporate Social Responsibility with Environmental Management, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
