From 2019, Dr Powell is Lecturer in Marketing and Programme Leader for BSc Marketing at the University of York.

Prior to this, Madeline worked as a Lecturer of Marketing at the University of Sheffield. In 2011, she was awarded a Graduate Training Assistant studentship to do her PhD at the University of York, exploring the financial sustainability of social enterprises delivering public services and their use of marketing.

Madeline also has a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Business Management from the University of York and has completed an MRes in Social Policy at the University of York which she was awarded with distinction. Her Masters dissertation was subsequently published and was awarded a Highly Commended Paper certificate from the Emerald Literati Network Awards. Madeline successfully completed The Certificate in Learning and Teaching in 2018 and is now a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Madeline is on the editorial board for Public Management Review and is also an at large board member for the International Research Society for Public Management. Madeline is also currently co-editing a special issue on the Third Sector, Social Enterprises and Public Service Delivery due for online publication in June/July 2020.

In 2018, she was awarded funding by the Academy of Marketing for a project titled “Relationship Building in Social Enterprise: Social Value Creation and Financial Sustainability” for which she is Principal Investigator.

In 2019, her paper published in Public Management Review https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14719037.2018.1438504  was recently awarded the Kooiman Prize (https://think.taylorandfrancis.com/journal-prize-public-management-review/) for best paper of 2019 in Public Management Review.
