Abstract
Based on a survey of nearly 2,000 social enterprises across Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, this landmark mapping estimates that Africa is home to about 2.18 million social enterprises generating roughly $96 billion in annual revenue (3.2% of the continent’s GDP) and at least 12 million jobs. More than half of these enterprises are led by women and a third by people under 35. The report sets out five priorities for governments, investors and development partners: building enabling ecosystems, unlocking capital, investing in skills, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and strengthening data collection.
