The Portuguese Social Enterprise Monitor (PSEM) 2023- 2024 provides insights into the perspectives and activities of a sample of social enterprises (SEs) in Portugal. The aim is to generate data and insights on the social entrepreneurship ecosystem that can be accessed by academics, decision-makers, current and future social entrepreneurs and civil society. We hope the report sheds light on the current state of the ecosystem, its challenges and opportunities, and serves as a foundation for future discussions and decision-making.
Abstract
Social enterprises and social innovation are present in our daily lives, playing an essential role in national and territorial cohesion. In Portugal, there are over 20,000 Social Economy organizations, and the Portugal Social Innovation Initiative alone has financed more than 600 social innovation projects with a positive societal impact.
This landscape presents both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, it is crucial for these organizations to demonstrate their impact and strengthen their business models. On the other hand, it is essential to ensure that Portugal continues to nurture the Social Innovation ecosystem created in recent years, which has positioned the country as a European benchmark.
ESLIDER-PORTUGAL – National Network of Social Entrepreneurs and Civil Society Leaders – aims to give voice to this agenda. In this context, it naturally partnered with the EUCLID NETWORK in developing the European Social Enterprise Monitor, becoming one of its national partners.
This report, following the one produced in 2020-2021, results from a national partnership between ESLIDER-PORTUGAL and Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics through its Yunus Social Innovation Center, which was responsible for the research.
The data in this report is essential for generating new insights based on knowledge, capable of influencing practices and policies able to improve the ecosystem. ESLIDER- PORTUGAL will be the voice for those proposals and will be at the forefront of advocating for more and better social innovation.
