Abstract

Using new metaphors to characterize social enterprises may unlock novel and effective ways to better understand their distinctiveness. Metaphors are frequently used to describe and understand social enterprises (S.E.s) as a type of organization. Some of the more popular metaphors may generate unhelpful constraints to, or assumptions within, discussions about S.E.s. Moreover, new types of metaphors may generate new insights into the nature and contribution of S.E.s.
